The Primary Care Respiratory Society
The Primary Care Respiratory Society (PCRS) is the UK-wide professional society supporting any health professional working in or with primary care to deliver high value patient-centred respiratory care.
Damage to the environment, poor outdoor and indoor air quality, climate change and pollution all contribute to and exacerbate lung conditions. PCRS determined that there was both appetite to reduce the environmental impact of respiratory healthcare and many steps that can be taken at patient, clinician, and sector wide level to address the problem.
PCRS identified six key areas that require action by individual healthcare professionals, healthcare commissioners, professional organisations and the pharmaceutical industry to make respiratory healthcare greener and kinder to the environment and required a visual interpretation to convey the complex information.
PCRS advocate a focus on the complete patient journey from prevention of disease and diagnosis, through to routine chronic care and including the acute situation with a #nowastenoharm approach. The campaign needed an identity and set of visual tools that allowed them to clearly present it as a PCRS campaign. This needed to be achieved adhering to existing brand guidelines. The design brief was to bring to life the campaign assets through a consistent and recognisable look and feel and provide a visual way to bring a positive and inspiring way to communicate the aspiration and help to promote understanding, engagement and interest.
The project was multi-layered and complex in the level of detail and required a design rationale that allowed for the rich information to be used simply and with ease. The audience was primarily professional and because of that we were able to use quite sophisticated and clinical based language to be supported by more simplified visual referencing. We developed a multi level visual key of common topics distilled down into an icon library. This key then connected the threads of information when the user navigates throughout the patient journey which took the form of a pathway. The pathway itself is the centrepiece of the campaign. The wider toolkit of icons and infographics are a collection of assets that allow PCRS to continue to evolve their information and brand them accordingly.

PCRS wanted to produce a resource to help clinicians deliver respiratory care in a way that was less environmentally damaging. The greener respiratory pathway is a multi layered resource, comprising key points on the patient pathway and numerous categories of resources - we wanted to make it easy to use, easy to understand and visually engaging. Emma and her team at Door 22, immediately understood the brief, provided a great set of different stylistic approaches, they listened to feedback and dove tailed their approach to our needs and resources. The result is a great interactive tool, that clearly and simply allows clinicians to find the information they need.
